Buddy
This gorgeous little bundle of blue, was saved from a breeder.
He was brought with a group to a pet shop, who noticed a few days later the bad leg. They apparently asked the breeder to take him back and for a refund, but were told the bird's 'neck would be wrung' if that happened... thankfully, the pet shop wouldn't let that happen, and contacted Happy Hollow sanctuary instead, who took him in without question.
They then got in contact with us to help and take bub in for extra care with our special needs.
While waiting for the initial vet assessment, we monitored him for any sign of discomfort. We were pleased to see him exploring happily and flying decently, as well as foraging, although it was clear his leg was giving him issue.
The vet assessment confirmed what we’d suspected: this little gent would need a leg amputation. While anaesthetic can be risky for small birds, this was necessary for Buddy’s quality of life as he grew up—and we had every faith in our avian vets.
Little Beaks supporters amazingly came to our aid to help raise funds for the operation, which was thankfully a success.
Buddy recovered beautifully, and enjoys life in our specially built aviary with other special needs birds.
